Notice Regarding Blue-Green Algae
On 05/30/23, a notice about the presence of blue green algae was posted at our beaches. Based on the clarity of the water, the overall concentration of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) in the lake is at very low levels. However, the wind can create concentrations in small areas of the lake and beaches that should be avoided. The purpose of the notice is to let members know to be on the lookout for these windblown scums or concentrations, and avoid them. When the wind shifts, they often disappear or disperse. Some FAQ's:

I don’t see any scum; why is there a notice posted? The wind can accumulate (or disperse) the algae, so conditions are constantly changing. This is why you need to always, whether there is a notice posted or not, be on the lookout for blue green algae concentrations and avoid them.
Is the lake safe to swim in? This is up to you to decide. Where the water is clear, there is a very low risk of exposure. Where there is scum or a high concentration of green blobs, the risk is higher and these areas should be avoided. You may want to follow the old adage, “when in doubt stay out.”
Is the algae toxic? Since about half the species are toxic, the safe assumption is that all blue green blooms are toxic.
Why don’t we treat the algae to make it go away? The root cause of the algae bloom is the right mix of warm temperature, still water, and nutrients (mainly phosphorous). Treatment has no impact on these conditions, so the algae may return shortly after application.
Why don’t we test the water to determine if it is safe? Test results take days, so the best approach for day to day evaluation is visual assessment. Tests are helpful to confirm an assessment when conditions are deteriorating.
Under what conditions will the beaches be closed for swimming? If overall clarity deterioration and visual assessment indicate we have moved into an unacceptable risk category, the conditions will be evaluated, the water tested, and our limnologist consulted to determine an action plan that may involve closing the beach for a period of time.
